Although the Arkansas Securities Dept has been around since 1958, the Investor Education program has only been active since 1997. This program was started by then Commissioner, Mac Dodson and is part of a national trend to promote investment know-how. A recent study showed that four out of five Americans are financially illiterate. The goal of this program is to change this statistic so as to protect the public from fraud and impart the financial skills needed to make beneficial and informed financial decisions.

The program so far has taken many different forms. The most active form has been presenting to senior investors. About 90% of our investigations at the department involve seniors, therefore, they have been our most heavily targeted group. The program has had booths at the state fair, regional Medicare Maze programs, and the Aging Arkansas Conference as well as speaking to local chapters of the AARP or Retired Teachers Association. Recently the program is exploring new territory. Arkansas has joined a national partnership bringing investor education into the schools. This program is called Financial Literacy 2001 or FL2001. At this point the department is offering to give a presentation or series of presentations to students on financial topics such as saving, investing, and credit options. In the future we will also be offering to give workshops where we familiarize teachers with the new financial curriculum the program has developed.

Our department has a number of resources to offer the investing public. These include excellent pamphlets, videos, and other publications in addition to the investing presentations. Everyone is encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.
